Phase 2 Orthodontics – Newark, CA
Ensuring Smiles Are Properly Aligned
After a child completes Phase 1 Orthodontics, it is not usual for dentists or orthodontists to suggest Phase 2. Their bite may be more fully developed thanks to the appliances worn previously; however, this next step ensures everything moves into place for better long-term oral health and aesthetics. At Newpark Mall Family Dental Group, we will wait until all their permanent teeth have erupted before recommending traditional braces to complete their treatment. If you would like to learn more about Phase 2 Orthodontics in Newark, call our office to schedule a consultation today.

What is Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase 2 Orthodontic treatment is the next step in your teenager’s smile journey. Once their permanent teeth have all erupted, we will discuss this next phase and what is required to straighten any misalignment of their teeth and/or bite.
This phase usually involves placing traditional brackets and wires on their upper and lower arches so that any crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth can be repositioned correctly. In most cases, those who complete Phase 1 Orthodontics spend less time wearing braces during Phase 2.
Does My Child Need Phase 2 Orthodontics?
It depends. While some patients who complete Phase 1 do not require this next step, others often need additional help to ensure their smile remains in its proper place long-term. Even if Phase 2 is not required immediately, it may be necessary later in adolescence.
Your child might be recommended for Phase 2 Orthodontics if:
- They have a narrow airway that causes them to breathe through their mouth.
- They have teeth that are severely misaligned (i.e., crooked, overlapping, gapped).
- They bite their cheeks, as this can be due to bite misalignment.
- They experience jaw discomfort or gum soreness.
What Happens After Phase 2 Orthodontics?
After your child’s braces are removed, we will supply them with a customized retainer. This phase of treatment is essential if their teeth and bite are to remain in their new location. Depending on their individual needs, we can provide either a fixed or removable retainer. If it is the latter, your child will need to make sure they wear it full-time initially. Once we believe that enough time has passed for the teeth to integrate, they may only need to wear it at night.
